1. Install Synaptic Package Manager:
You need synaptic package manager to install, download and upgrade the packages and plugins for your Ubuntu. It is easier to use from Package Manager than using command from terminal.
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get install synaptic
2. Check for Updates:
After installing synaptic check for the updates available and install them:
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade
3. Install Gnome Shell:
Install the gnome shell and work more efficiently. Gnome 3.10 or 3.12 can be installed and used easily in Ubuntu 14.04.
4. Setup your Accounts:
You need to setup your accounts in Ubuntu so that it will be easier in the future.
5. Install Additional Drivers:
Go to Software & Updates and Select Additional Drivers tab. Then you can download the additional drivers required for your system.
6. Install VLC:
To listen and watch the music and videos you need to install VLC media player. VLC media player is far more better than any other player.
7. Install Skype:
You can install the latest version of skype and use it. Skype for Ubuntu is not much better than the Skype available in Windows but we cannot deny it. Skype is the best of all.
8. Install Cloud Storage:
To store and retrieve the data and files you can use Dropbox in Ubuntu. To install dropbox run
sudo apt-get install nautilus-dropbox
9. Add Additional apps:
You can install and try other additional apps as required. Some apps like gimp, chromium, filezilla, pidgin, bit torrent, etc.
10. Privacy:
You need to protect your privacy while using Ubuntu. Go to Privacy and Security windows and select the options as your need.
Also you can install media codec, games and more others.
